How Pen Scanners Work

A pen scanner looks simple: place it over printed text and move it across the page. Behind that is image capture, text recognition, and processing.

The Basic Process

First, capture: the scanner's optical hardware captures the printed area as you move the device across the text. Second, image processing: the captured image is processed to separate the printed characters from the background. Third, OCR: optical character recognition identifies the characters and reconstructs them as digital text. Finally, output: the recognized text can be displayed, spoken, translated, transferred, or stored, depending on the device.

What Is OCR?

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is the technology that allows software to identify printed characters inside an image.

Without OCR, a scanner has essentially captured a picture. With OCR, the picture can become searchable and editable text.

Why OCR Quality Matters

OCR performance isn't simply about a percentage. Real-world performance can change depending on font, font size, print quality, contrast, paper condition, lighting, scan speed, text alignment, language, and special characters.
